Steps for Installing Shutters on Vinyl Exteriors

Installing new or replacing your old shutters on vinyl exteriors is pretty easy, and there are only a few key steps to ensure they are securely and properly mounted! As always, focus on your own safety and ensure that you have the right tools and know-how to get the job done right before undertaking the installation.

1) Position the Shutters Where You Want Them

The first step is positioning the shutters where you want them. Hold the shutters up to the window and make sure they are centered and level. You can use a pencil to mark the spots where the mounting holes will be drilled. It’s important to get the positioning right to ensure your shutters look symmetrical.

Double-Check Your Measurements and Placement

Before moving forward, double-check your measurements and placement by measuring the distance from the edge of the window to each side of the shutter to ensure they are equidistant. You can use a level to verify that the shutters are perfectly vertical.

2) Drill Mounting and Pilot Holes for Shutter Hardware

Once you’ve marked the spots for the mounting holes, it’s time to drill!

Start by drilling the mounting holes in the shutters. These holes should align with the marks you made earlier. Next, hold the shutters in place and drill pilot holes into the vinyl siding through the mounting holes. The pilot holes should be slightly smaller than the screws to ensure a snug fit.

Be careful not to drill too deeply to avoid damaging the siding or underlying structures!

3) Attach and Install the Shutters

With the pilot holes drilled, you’re ready to attach and install the shutters! Position the shutters over the pilot holes and insert the screws. Tighten the screws, making sure the shutters are securely fastened to the siding. Check again with a level to make sure the shutters remain straight and adjust if necessary. Repeat this process for all shutters.

4) Paint or Stain Your Shutters if Desired

This final step is optional but can significantly enhance the appearance of your shutters and help them match your home’s exterior.

Choose a paint or stain that is suitable for the shutter material and apply it evenly. Allow adequate drying time between coats, and make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the best results.
